In designing the new Philharmonic building, we analyzed existing data, focusing on its symbolic and functional aspects. Symbolically, it holds significant value as a cultural hub in Chisinau, where music and other art forms find a home. The original Philharmonic served as a rare space for classical concerts but struggled in a challenging economic climate. The new building aims to be a cultural nucleus and an attractive destination within the city.

The design represents a rebirth of the music scene, much like the mythical Phoenix. It reflects the magic of music through form and function, creating a timeless space dedicated to sound and art. Inspired by the Nai—a traditional Moldovan pan flute—its shape evokes harmony, elegance, and fluidity. The vertical
rhythm of the façade resembles the Nai, combining cultural heritage with a modern aesthetic while
maintaining lightness and elegance.
Functionally, the challenge was to create a compact building with maximum accessibility while preserving as much public space as possible. Outdoor areas include a summer theater for concerts and cultural events, allowing the space to function independently from the Philharmonic’s schedule. The interior ensures clear traffic flow, comfort, and efficient operation for visitors, artists, and staff. The ground floor features the foyer, wardrobe, café, and bar, providing seamless access to both halls and
artist areas. Dressing rooms, backstage spaces, and green rooms connect directly to the concert areas. The second level contains the small hall, changing rooms, and a connected walkway that can host exhibitions. The third level holds rehearsal spaces, while administrative offices are positioned above, insulated from performance noise.

Two underground parking levels operate independently, boosting the building’s flexibility and economic potential. Safety measures include strategic escape routes and abundant natural light through transparent façades and skylights. The Rising Philharmonic blends cultural heritage with modern design, embodying resilience and providing Chisinau with a dynamic, inspiring landmark for its future.
